Air India Baggage allowance

Following the notice issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation, Security Government of India, vide Circular 18/2006 dated 29 Sept. 2006.Passengers boarding an AI aircraft will not be allowed to carry in their hand baggage or on person liquids, gels, or aerosols, which include beverages, shampoos, sun tan lotions, creams, tooth paste, hair gels, hair sprays, liquid cosmetics or any other items of similar consistency, exceeding 100 ml, except medicines, inhalers accompanied by prescriptions and baby food.

These items will be carried in one clear transparent re-sealable, one litre size plastic bag and will be subjected to the prescribed screening and security checks


PLEASE ENSURE THE CARRY-ON BAGS IN THE CABIN DO NOT EXCEED THE DIMENSIONS OF 55 CMS X 40 CMS X 20 CMS AND A MAXIMUM WEIGHT OF 8 KGS.
Duty free items purchased at the airport of departure in India will be permitted for carriage on the aircraft only if they are:
Carried in uniquely identifiable bags (bearing the name of the Duty Free Shop and the inscription "Duty Free Items") with a cash receipt attached to the bag.
The Duty Free Shops are responsible for the safety and security screening of Duty Free items purchased by passengers and will ensure they are delivered to the concerned passengers at the gate of the aircraft.
If passengers are transferring to another flight at any point on their journey or at destination, or deplaning from the aircraft at a transit point, where they are required to go through security checks once again, duty free liquids, and gels exceeding 100 ml. and purchased in India will not be permitted. However, items purchased in that country, at the airport of departure will be permitted as per the local laws.

To ease your journey, we suggest that most items are placed in your checked-in baggage, except items of value and those required on-board the aircraft, are carried in your hand baggage.
In addition to one piece of cabin baggage or package, you may also be permitted to carry the following items, subject to Security Regulations:
Lady's hand bag.
An overcoat or wrap.
A rug or a blanket
A camera or a pair or binoculars
Reasonable amount of reading material for the flight.
Infant's feed for consumption during the flight and infant's carrying basket if an infant is carried.
Collapsible wheelchair or pair of crutches or braces for passenger's use if dependent on these.
A gift item purchased from the Airport duty free shop.
Walking stick.
Umbrella (Folding type)
Feeding bottle.
Shaving kit, excluding razor blade and straight razors.
Medicines required during Flight like Asthma inhaler etc.
Umbrella (Folding type)
Laptops.
Cell phones.
An odd sized cabin baggage not conforming to the specified dimension will not be allowed in the cabin. Such baggage will be removed at the gate / boarding point, Will be affixed with a "Limited Release Baggage Label" and will be loaded in the hold.

Children are entitled to the same cabin baggage allowances as adults.

When an infant (not entitled to a seat or free baggage allowance) accompanies an adult, a carrycot, or a fully collapsible push chair/stroller is allowed. This may be carried in the cabin if space is available, or else as checked baggage.

Due to security reasons / Government regulations, passengers travelling on flights originating from certain stations like Jammu, Srinagar etc. are not allowed to carry any hand baggage. Please check the current regulations of the station.
Baggage exceeding in size, the sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) in excess of 45 inches or 115 centimeters, cannot be treated as hand baggage and will have to be checked in.

Checked Baggage allowance for USA/CANADA
Free Baggage allowance for USA/CANADA is as follows:

First Class and Executive Class
Free Baggage Allowance: 2 pieces.
The sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) must not exceed 62 inches or 158 centimeters for each piece.
The maximum weight permissible for a single piece of baggage is 32 kgs or 70 pounds.


Economy Class
Free Baggage Allowance: 2 pieces.
The sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) of both must not exceed 107 inches. Moreover the linear dimension of each piece should not exceed 62 inches
The weight of each bag must not exceed 50 pounds or 23 Kilos.


Infants in all classes
Free Baggage Allowance: 1 piece
The sum of the 3 dimensions (length + breadth + height) must not exceed 45 inches or 115 centimeters.
In addition they are entitled to 1 collapsible stroller/carrycot/infant car seat.

Piece concept on IC coded flights is not Applicable on Flights operated by Beech craft & ATR Aircraft's and on class of travel U,T & S.

The following items will be considered as part of your checked in baggage allowance and must not exceed 62 inches or 158 centimeters - sleeping bag or bedroll/rucksack/knapsack/back-pack/fishing kit/sporting arms/snow-skis/water skis/golfing kit/fishing kit/wheelchair or assistive devices that
the passenger is dependant upon

Infants are allowed 10 Kilos checked in baggage but are not entitled to a seat. One checked or carried collapsible stroller or carrycot or bassinet or car seat for infant can be carried in the passenger cabin subject to availability of space.

Child fares are entitled to the same baggage allowance as adults.

Incapacitated passengers may carry one wheelchair or other assistive devices.

Interline Baggage Allowance Between India-USA and Europe-USA

Baggage Allowance When Interlining on Co
On a through AI document, Continental Airlines(CO)'s current check-in baggage policy when interlining on CO on the IND -USA-IND route and the Europe -USA -Europe route is as follows for the given journeys:

Journey type 1) Passengers travelling between India and USA with IND-NYC/ORD & v.v on AI and intra USA sector on CO:
a) When travelling in the westbound direction irrespective of the city of origin in India(e.g. BOM-AI-x/NYC-CO-HOU), AI policy will apply provided there are no stopovers at the AI gateway.

b) When travelling in the eastbound direction to BOM/DEL (e.g. HOU-CO-x/NYC- AI-BOM/DEL), CO baggage policy will apply wherein there is no charge for the
1st & 2nd bag as long as there is no stopover at the AI gateway. However, when travelling in the eastbound direction to any point other than BOM/DEL (e.g. HOU-CO-X/NYC-AI-AMD) CO baggage policy will apply wherein CO charges $ 25 for the 1st bag and $ 35 for the 2nd bag.
For above journey type, if a stopover occurs at AI gateway in USA, then the applicable CO baggage policy for purely intra US travel will apply viz. 1st bag at $ 25 and 2nd bag is charged at $35 for the intra US sector on CO.

Journey type 2) Passengers travelling between India and USA with IND-FRA/PAR/LON & v.v on AI and EUR- USA sector on CO(e.g. BOM/DEL-AI-Europe-CO-USA & vv)
a) When travelling in the westbound direction irrespective of the city of origin in India(e.g. BOM-AI-x/LON-CO--HOU), AI policy will apply provided there are no stopovers at the AI gateway.

b) When travelling in the eastbound direction to BOM/DEL(e.g. HOU-CO-x/LON-AI-BOM/DEL), CO baggage policy will apply wherein there is no charge for the 1st & 2nd bag as long as there is no stopover at the AI gateway. However, when travelling in the eastbound direction to any point other than BOM/DEL(e.g. HOU-CO-X/LON-AI-AMD) CO baggage policy will apply wherein the 1st bag is free and 2nd bag is charged at $50.
For above journey type, if a stopover occurs at AI gateway in Europe, then the applicable CO baggage policy for purely Europe-USA travel will apply viz.
1st bag is free and 2nd bag is charged at $ 50 for the Europe - USA sector on CO.

Journey type 3) Passengers travelling between Europe and USA with FRANKFURT/NEWARK-CHICAGO & v.v on AI and intra USA sector on CO
a) When travelling in the westbound direction (e.g. FRA-AI-X/NYC-CO-HOU), AI policy will apply provided there is no stopover at the AI gateway in USA.

b) When travelling in the eastbound direction, (e.g. HOU-CO-X/NYC-AI-FRA), CO’s baggage policy will apply wherein there is no charge for the 1st bag and a charge of $50 for the 2nd bag provided there is no stopover at the AI gateway in USA.
For above journey type, if a stopover occurs at AI gateway in USA, then the applicable CO baggage policy for purely intra US travel will apply viz. 1st bag at $ 25 and 2nd bag at $35 for the intra US sector on CO.

Baggage Allowance When Interlining on AA
When travel is between INDIA & USA on AI with only the intra US sectors on AA, then the baggage allowance that is applicable on the AI sectors will also be applicable on the AA sectors.
However, when travel is between INDIA & USA wherein travel between INDIA & LONDON/PARIS/FRANKFURT is on AI and travel between Europe & USA is on AA, AA shall charge $50 for the 2nd checked bag for the transatlantic sector EUROPE - USA & vv.

Baggage Allowance When Interlining on UA
All passengers checking with UA as the first check-in carrier for all itineraries from the US to India and Europe will be subject to the 1PC concept irrelevant of the ticket stock.
While travelling in the westward direction when passenger checks in, the first international leg on AI (viz. India –New York/Chicago/Frankfurt/Paris/London or Frankfurt-Newark/Chicago) and the onwards intra USA OR EUROPE -USA sector with UA, the policy of AI will apply (viz. 2PC). However, this applies for through check in of bags. Any break in travel, such as a stopover, the new uplifting carrier (UA) will drive the baggage rate at check in for new flight (i.e. 1 PC for intra USA or Europe -USA sector on UA)
While travelling in the eastward direction when the passenger checks in with UA for the intra USA sector or the USA -EUROPE sector with an onward AI connection, the policy of UA will apply viz 1PC concept with a charge of $ 50 for the second checked in baggage.

Baggage Allowance When Interlining on DL
On a through AI document, Delta Airlines(DL)'s check-in baggage policy when interlining on DL on the IND -USA-IND route or the Europe -USA -Europe route is as follows:
1) When travel is between India and USA or between EUROPE and USA with the intra US sector on DL, over-the-water carrier’s rules apply (fees and allowances) if the bags are being checked all the way through.
e.g. BOM - AI -JFK -DL-ATL-DL-JFK -AI BOM-----------------AI baggage allowance will apply for the whole journey - eastwards as well as westwards direction.
FRA- AI - CHI - DL ATL-DL-CHI-AI -FRA -----------------AI baggage allowance will apply for the whole journey - eastwards as well as westwards direction.
Please Note: Delta will honor the international bag schedule even if a stopover occurs at AI gateway – as part of an international journey.

2) For travel between India and USA via Europe on DL, the “most significant” carrier’s fees apply.
i.e. when travel is between India and USA with Europe -USA-Europe sector on DL, baggage allowance for the Europe -USA-Europe sector travelled on DL will be based on the mileage travelled on each airline.
a) If the mileage travelled on the AI sector is higher than the AI baggage policy will apply for the EUR -USA sector as well.
For example:
TRV-AI BOM-AI-FRA-DL-ATL
AI TRV BOM FRA MILEAGE 4865
DL FRA ATL MILEAGE 4606

Mileage on AI sector is greater than that on DL sector; hence AI baggage policy will apply for FRA-ATL sector travelled on DL and the TRV-FRA sector.

b) If the mileage travelled on the DL sector is higher than the DL baggage policy will apply for the EUR -USA sector.
For example:
BOM-AI-FRA-DL-ATL
AI BOM FRA MILEAGE 4082
DL FRA ATL MILEAGE 4606
Mileage on DL sector is greater than that on AI sector hence DL baggage* policy will apply for FRA-ATL sector and AI baggage policy will be applicable only for the BOM-FRA sector.
* DL baggage policy for passengers travelling between USA/Canada & Europe is : 1st bag free and 2 nd bag for economy passengers to be charged at 50 EUR/CAD/USD(CAD amount will be charged exit Canada, EUR amount will be charged exit Europe and USD amount will be charged exit USA)

Baggage Allowance When Interlining on US Airways
On a through AI document, US airways(US) current check-in baggage policy for sectors interlined on US for the IND -USA-IND route and the Europe -USA -Europe route is as follows for the given journeys:

Journey type 1) Passengers travelling between India and USA with IND-NYC/ORD & v.v on AI and intra USA sector on US:
a) When travelling in the westbound direction (e.g. BOM-AI-xNYC-US-WAS), AI policy will apply provided there are no stopovers at the AI gateway and AI checks the bag to the final destination. At the time of check in from India if a bag tag is printed by AI only up to NYC/ORD and the passenger needs to re-check with US at NYC/CHI for a new bag tag to be printed for their final destination, then US baggage fee would be applicable for the intra USA sector( viz.1st bag at $ 25 and 2nd bag is charged at $35 for the intra USA sectors on US for economy travel).

b) When travelling in the eastbound direction (e.g. WAS-US--xNYC- AI-BOM), US baggage policy will be applicable for sectors travelled on US wherein US charges $ 25 for the 1st bag and $ 35 for the 2nd bag for economy travel.
For above journey type, if a stopover occurs at AI gateway in USA, then the applicable US baggage policy for purely intra USA travel will apply viz. 1st bag at $ 25 and 2nd bag is charged at $35 for the intra USA sectors travelled on US for economy travel.

Journey type 2) Passengers travelling between India and USA with IND-FRA/PAR/LON & v.v on AI and EUR- USA sector on US(e.g. BOM-AI-Europe-US-USA & vv)
a) When travelling in the westbound direction (e.g. BOM-AI-xFRA-US--PHL), AI policy will apply provided there are no stopovers at the AI gateway and AI checks the bag to the final destination. At the time of check in from India if a bag tag is printed by AI only up to FRA/PAR/LON and the passenger needs to re-check with US at PAR/LON/FRA for a new bag tag to be printed for their final destination, then US bag fee would be applicable for the Europe- USA sector( viz.1st bag is free and 2nd bag is charged at $55 for the sector travelled on US for economy travel).

b) When travelling in the eastbound direction (e.g. PHL-US--xFRA -AI- BOM), US baggage policy will apply for sectors travelled on US wherein the 1st bag is free and 2nd bag is charged at $55.
For above journey type, if a stopover occurs at AI gateway in Europe, then the applicable US baggage policy for purely Europe-USA travel will apply viz.
1st bag is free and 2nd bag is charged at $ 55 for the Europe - USA sector travelled on US for economy travel.

Journey type 3) Passengers travelling between Europe and USA with FRA/EWR-CHI & v.v on AI and intra USA sector on US
a) When travelling in the westbound direction (e.g. FRA-AI-X/NYC-US-WAS), AI policy will apply provided there is no stopover at the AI gateway in USA and AI checks the bag to the final destination. At the time of check in from Europe if a bag tag is printed by AI only up to NYC/ORD and the passenger needs to re-check with US at NYC/CHI for a new bag tag to be printed for their final destination, then US bag fee would be applicable for the intra USA sector( viz.1st bag at $ 25 and 2nd bag is charged at $35 for the intra USA sectors on US for economy travel)

b) When travelling in the eastbound direction, (e.g. WAS-US-X/NYC-AI-FRA), US baggage policy will apply for the US sectors wherein there is no charge for the 1st bag and a charge of $55 for the 2nd bag provided there is no stopover at the AI gateway in USA.
For above journey type, if a stopover occurs at AI gateway in USA, then the applicable US baggage policy for purely intra USA travel will apply viz. 1st bag at $ 25 and 2nd bag at $35 for the intra USA sector on US for economy travel.

Improper carriage of baggage can put one through a lot of inconvenience. Passengers are therefore advised to ensure their baggage is properly packed and tagged. The following tips will be handy.
Make sure you know your free checked baggage allowance.
Don’t pack any valuables in your checked baggage.
Any items over your allowance will be charged as excess baggage.
Label your bags correctly with your name and address and remove tags and labels left over from previous flights.
Make sure you know your hand baggage allowance and the latest restrictions on carriage of certain items in your hand baggage.
Make sure you take medication, important documents, valuable items and cash in your hand baggage.
Do not carry packages with unidentified contents on behalf of other people.
In some instances you may be required to identify or claim your baggage, for security or local customs reasons, at the connecting point.
Do not accept any packets from unknown persons.
Do not leave baggage unobserved at any time, especially within airport area. Unattended baggage may be removed by Airport Security Staff as an object of suspicion.
Make sure you declare before checking-in, if carrying any arms or explosive substances. Concealment is an offence under the Aircraft Act and Rules.
Battery cells in any electrical / electronic items are permissible now & will now not be removed at the security point. Loose battery cells / dry cells carried in the hand baggage are liable to be removed and the airline would not be in a position to hand over the same at the destination. Please carry the same in the checked baggage.
Before approaching the check-in counters, you may be required to pass all your pieces of baggage to be checked in through the X-ray machines operated by security personnel.Excess Baggage
Should your baggage exceed the limitations of the Free Baggage allowance, an excess baggage charge needs to be paid.

Weight System
In the weight system the excess baggage charges per kilo is 1.5% of the highest normal direct one way economy class fare. These charges will be in effect on the date of issuance of the excess baggage ticket.

Piece System
The excess baggage charges under the Piece System are based as follows:

USA/ Europe - To/ From New York/ Boston/ Washington/ Philadelphia to Great Britain/ France/ Germany - USD 90.00 per piece.
To from rest of USA to Great Britain/ France/ Germany – USD 110.00 per piece.
USA/ India - To/ from New York/ Baltimore/ Boston/ Philadelphia/ Washington - USD 123.00 per piece.
To/ from other cities in US - USD 133.00 per piece.
London - Toronto ..2 Checked in pieces permitted each should not exceed 23kgs.
Excess weight between 23kgs to 32 kgs to be charged USD50/GBP35.
Extra 3rd piece. GBP 100 per piece.
Trans-Pacific
USA/ India - To/ from Alaska/ Hawaii - USD 109.00 per piece.
To/ from Los Angeles/ Portland/ San Francisco/ South East Asia - USD 121.00 per piece.
To/ from other US Cities – USD129.00 per piece.
Canada/India - Trans-Atlantic
To/ from Manitoba/ Saskatchewan/ Ontario - CAD185.00 per piece.

Special Charges for certain items
In case you wish to carry a bag with you which you do not wish to place in the overhead rack, you will have to pay the normal fare for an extra seat, as if you were paying for an additional passenger. This baggage will be subject to security clearance. Tour fares or other rebated fares may not be used for excess baggage charges. Maximum weight of such seat occupying excess baggage should not be more than 75 Kilos per seat. Even if such extra seat charges are applied, passenger free baggage allowance will not be increased.
Baggage shipped as cargo shall consist of only personal wearing apparel and personal articles of a passenger. This includes portable musical instruments, portable typewriters and portable sports equipment but excluding machinery, machine or spare parts, money, securities, jewellery, watches and plated ware, furs, films, cameras, tickets, documents, liquors, perfumes and articles of household furnishing, merchandise and salesman samples.

Please Note
Shipments will be carried only between the same points (airports only) for which the passenger holds a ticket, provided that the baggage is delivered not later than the date of the passenger’s departure to an IATA accredited cargo agent.

The passenger using this facility must make a declaration of the contents of the baggage, complete all documents required for dispatch and customs, and be responsible for all additional charges for collection, delivery and customs. The baggage shall be cleared through customs by the passenger personally or by his agent.

It shall be within the discretion of the carrier on which flight the baggage is carried.
